Coastal Management Division
In Pinellas County, healthy beaches are vital to our way of life. Both visitors and residents prize our 35 miles of fine, white sandy beaches on eleven (11) barrier islands along the Gulf of Mexico. What many don't realize is that Pinellas County's developed sandy shoreline is actively managed. The Coastal Management Division is responsible for the long-term management of Pinellas County's sandy shoreline along the barrier islands. This involves shore protection projects, dune enhancement, and long-term planning with state and federal agencies. The twelve (12) coastal municipalities are responsible for short-term beach maintenance such as garbage collection, lifeguards, and swim buoys. The Coastal Management Division also maintains the county's public waterways and boating regulatory zones.
The map below illustrates the barrier islands and tidal inlets in Pinellas County.
