Cross Bayou Canal Improvements Project
Project ID# 002124A
Cross Bayou Canal between 150th Avenue N through 126th Avenue N
In 1916, the Cross Bayou Canal (CBC) was built to drain land for agricultural production and to transport the products to Port Largo for shipment. The CBC is a major channel that conveys stormwater from the surrounding watershed to Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico.
The Cross Bayou Canal Improvements Project is focused on extending the life of the 100+ year old, 6.2 mile canal, and will address debris and exotic vegetation removal, dredging, canal bank stabilization, and acquisition of property rights (temporary and permanent). This project is unique in that it requires immediate implementation to remove exotic vegetation in order to gain access to the canal in several areas. Clearing and grubbing is a prerequisite for design and permitting for surveying, dredging, and bank stabilization. The county is exploring partnering opportunities with the Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD) to address flood improvements, water quality and natural system creation and enhancement.
The project has been broken into three different segments for implementation as each segment has different characteristics.
- Segment 1: from 150th Avenue North to 126th Avenue North
- Segment 2: from 126th Avenue North to Bryan Dairy Road
- Segment 3: from Bryan Dairy Road to 102nd Avenue North (to be planned after property rights are acquired)
Exotic vegetation removal began in Segment 1 in July 2018 and is continuing. Temporary rights of entry are being obtained for Segments 1 and 2. Segments 2 and 3 will commence at a later time due to existing FDOT construction.*
- Design Start: October 2019
- Design End: September 2025
- Construction Start: October 2019
- Construction End: September 2025
*Segments 2 and 3 will be scheduled to start after FDOT construction in the watershed is completed.
