Project Overview

Pinellas County Public Works, through the county’s Capital Improvement Program and a state grant, is making safety and roadway improvements to the intersection of Sunset Point Road (CR 576) at N. Betty Lane, and new pavement surface from Douglas Avenue to Kings Highway in Clearwater. The project includes turn lane enhancements, the installation of mast arms and new pedestrian signals at the intersection, along with ADA-compliant sidewalks and curb ramps. Bike lanes will also be added along the roadway. The completion of the project will enhance pedestrian and bicyclist safety and provide a more efficient flow of motorist.

 

Additionally, on Sunset Point Road west of Betty Lane, a new bridge will be constructed at Spring Branch as part of an overall Drainage Basin improvement plan coordinated with the City of Clearwater. Included in this construction are channel enhancements, new sidewalk (replacing a steel pedestrian bridge), roadway widening to enable an additional left turn lane at Betty Lane, and significantly reduce flood elevations in the Spring Branch Sub-Basin.

 

Segments of Sunset Point Road will be completely closed during construction and open to local traffic only. Some portions will be closed to all traffic due to the drainage culvert replacement. Detour signs will direct traffic around construction. There may be temporary disruptions at individual driveways and an occasional restriction of traffic flow. The county’s contractor will coordinate with each property owner in advance of impacting driveway access.

• Construction Start: March 2019
• Construction End: February 2021
